5 Ways to Motivate Yourself

Chances are you wound up here because you have an idea, activity or hobby in mind that you really want to get into. We all go through many, many MANY instances throughout life where we have an interest that we want to get into, but have a lack of motivation to follow through with it. For instance, mine has always been hiking. I have always wanted to get into it, but always lacked the energy when it came to actually doing it. I always blame it on not having the time, or making excuses on why I should put it off until the next time. 

Or who knows? Maybe its something you’ve been trying to motivate yourself to do, but find days or weeks going by without it getting done because you don’t have the interest, like laundry or cleaning for instance. We all have to do it, but how many people really want to? Exactly. If these have been one of your big struggles, keep reading to find out some ways to overcome the lack of energy, and turn your dream into a reality!

1. The first way to find motivation to do anything and everything is time. Find out how long it takes and set that time aside once a day, week, or even month. Give yourself a set time to complete the project or hobby on a set schedule. As I said before, I could never find the motivation for hiking for the longest time. Let alone doing things I didn’t enjoy. Recently I started giving myself a set schedule for hiking, one full day a week. Every Saturday I enjoy hiking mountains and trails throughout the state with my girlfriend and dogs, and I haven’t had a single issue with motivation anymore. 

For years I was the same with household chores like dishes and taking trash out. Its all simple stuff, but just plain boring. Now that I recently became a homeowner, I go to work, come home and go straight to work on household chores. I find that coming in and getting comfy makes me not want to get back up. Just get it done. Give yourself a set time, and just do it. No excuses. Get it done and you can relax after!

2. Next on the list I would say is to plan ahead. This goes right along with time, but has some added factors. Planning ahead is not only giving yourself that set schedule, but also giving yourself a little time for anything that may come up. Maybe you’re trying something that requires driving. If your a speed demon on the road, plan ahead just incase you get pulled over. Or Hiking fans should plan ahead just incase they possibly get lost, or break down, or even get injured! A favorite saying of mine is, “hope for the best, but expect the worst.” And this couldn’t be more accurate to what I’m saying here!

3. The next way to get motivation with absolutely anything is to do it with friends. Being alone in general can be boring when working, and having company always helps. That is, unless you’re relaxing, then by all means, be alone. But, if you want motivation, company is a huge factor in getting stuff done. As I said before, I recently became a homeowner. With that came the responsibility of putting a new roof on my house. I have been putting it off, but officially got it set up to put on this weekend. I have friends and family coming to help out, and all volunteer work! I strongly suggest getting a group of friends that will help out when needed for free, or even if you pay them in food or drinks. This was also a big factor in my hiking every weekend! Along with my girlfriend and our pups, we made a facebook group inviting our closest friends to join us every weekend! Like I said, weather its a hobby you like, or just something that needs to get done, have a friend help out or at least around for company, I promise it will help!

4. Fourth and almost last is to celebrate completion! Once you finish your task, hobby, or activity, have some fun and celebrate! Maybe have a few drinks with friends, or a fire and relax. Even take a bath, or jam out to your favorite songs and do a victory dance. Who knows? Whatever it is you do when you get excited, do it, and do it proud! You’ve finished and earned it after all!

5. Fifth and last step is simple. Repeat! This loops back to step one-four. Keep setting your time aside to do this as needed, plan ahead for any bad turn that could happen in your endeavors, fill all of your friends in of your schedule incase they would like to join your set schedule, and last but not least celebrate! I promise you, after the first time, it gets easier, and eventually it will become second nature to get it done! Never sit on your couch and wonder what life would be like ‘IF’ you did something. Get up, do it, and make no excuses.

  1. This is a great post. It actually goes over things other posts dont. I do sometimes skip the celebration step or planning ahead as well. I will take these into consideration though!


  2. I always say I want to get back into the gym, but I don’t have the money! Then I think about starting yoga at home, and then my excuse is I don’t have the time! Oh well, maybe one day hah.
